A porcelain or ceramic crown covers and restores a weakened tooth. Our dentists may recommend a dental crown for a tooth with a large crack, cavity, or stain. They may also recommend ceramic or porcelain crowns to cover irregularly-shaped teeth.
What to Expect
First, our dentists will need to remove enough tooth structure to make room for the crown. That way, your tooth won’t look large or bulky with the dental crown on top. Next, they’ll take impressions of your teeth and design your dental crown right in front of your eyes. Once our dentists are happy with the design, they’ll send it to the milling machine in our office.
Our milling machine carves dental crowns out of blocks of ceramic and porcelain. Since we make dental crowns from precise 3D images, you can be sure your dental crown will fit well over your tooth. Once your tooth crown is ready, our dentists will make sure it’s the correct size, color, and shape. The final steps are to remove the temporary crown, prepare your tooth, and bond the new dental crown over top.
Each patient is different. If you’re not a candidate for a CEREC same-day crown, we’ll need to send your digital impressions to a lab. This means that the dental crown procedure will take two appointments, not one. While you wait for your dental crown, we’ll place a temporary cover over your teeth. Your permanent crown will be ready when you return for your second appointment.
Aftercare Instructions
Take care of your dental crown like you do the rest of your smile. This means brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once daily. You’ll also want to continue seeing our dentists every 6 months for preventive care. During your appointment, we’ll be able to check the condition of your dental crown. Ceramic and
